Composing Narrative

Korean-born Swiss-French artist Kim Seob Boninsegni publishes a very light black-and-white book of text that makes the most of a small budget and basic design resources. Numerous short texts between half a page and six pages in length – including eight guest contributions – are linked by their content into three overarching narratives. The idiosyncratic text composition is underscored by simple design decisions: each of the texts begins on a right-hand page, so that the reader can dip into the book at any point. Isolated sentences occasionally placed to the left act as connecting elements establishing narrative coherence, while the three narratives are separated from each other by black double pages. The symmetrical type area runs close to the edge of the book, leaving space towards the binding for the page numbers and titles, which are rotated 90 degrees. The grey softcover carries the book’s title in large Korean and Latin script. It is produced using black foil stamping and makes a very engaging and elegant impression.
