'Bastard', handwoven carpet
Essay
This handwoven carpet is particularly soft, warm and compact. With its rich colour patterns, it can be seen as a winking European answer to the oriental carpet. The Bastard gets its structure, volume and exclusive thickness from the seven-colour warp (no repeat), with the filling and the warp threads being brought together in a sixfold Panama weave, as well as from the subsequent felting. The waste materials are processed into Flokati carpets in the textiles workshop of the Bürgerspital Basel.
Comments by the nominators:
Like its monochrome predecessor, Weichling, the 'Bastard' is a clever niche product that makes an intelligent use of the possibilities offered by handweaving.
