Essay

The redesign of the Raiffeisenbank business offices on Kreuzplatz sees the abolition of the functional principle of the counter as a barrier between the customer and the bank staff. Instead, the branch now presents itself in the guise of an 'open bank', a place of meeting. Flamboyantly curved walls articulate the spatial continuum and create varied vistas. At the same time they mediate between open and discreet spaces – the latter to be used for consultations and internal meetings. Portraits of famous inhabitants of the local district are the leitmotif of the digitally milled wall facings, emphasising the bank's local roots. Bright colours, in combination with the maximised natural light, further accentuate the bank's friendly atmosphere.

Comment by the nominators:
Here an impressive interior architecture project has been realised, enabling the Raiffeisenbank to correct its image as a mere country bank. The company also stresses the importance of good architecture in its rural branches, where regular architectual competitions are held – an admirable idea.
