About the Awards 2010

Competition

In the first round of the Swiss Federal Design Competition 2010, 60 designers were selected from some 240 dossiers, and their original work was reviewed by the jury in Bern. Following the jury's proposal, the BAK awarded prizes to 28 submissions in the fields of graphic design (11), fashion (6), photography (5), industrial design (4), jewellery (1) and scenography (1). The award winners have the opportunity to choose between a cash prize of 25,000 Swiss Francs, a residency with a renowned firm and a studio residency at home or abroad. The competition is open to Swiss individuals, groups, collectives, teams and labels under 40 years of age.

In collaboration with the BAK, the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is mounting a combined exhibition of the award-winning young designers and the recipients of the design prize. Nicolas Le Moigne from Lausanne designed the scenography of the exhibition. It is dominated by Spanset straps as a visual leitmotiv, which Le Moigne used to mount display cases or to attach freestanding walls to columns. They also guide visitors through the exhibition.

The mandate for the graphic design of the publication is given to young, innovative designers for a period of three years. This year, Jonathan Hares has created a surprisingly slim publication, complemented by a highly informative web platform. Hares has radically revamped the way the design prize can be presented and communicated. Working with programmers and printers, his product intentionally incorporates two mutually complementary media. In addition, the publication itself innovatively redefines the printed medium's role of providing information.
