Typographical experiments

Atlas Studio, a Zurich-based design firm founded in 2012 by Martin Andereggen, Claudio Gasser and Jonas Wandeler, works on both commissions and its own graphic design projects. The trio all studied at the Zurich University of the Arts, which is also where they started working together.
The main focus of their work is on designing posters, flyers and visual identities for cultural and other events.
Their approach typically involves playing with letters, words, fonts, lines and spaces, and boldly combining colour gradients, typefaces and dimensions. Various cut-up logos of familiar products and brands are merged into a single poster, as with Gym, Tan, Laundry (2012), a work based on a phrase coined in the MTV show Jersey Shore.
Unconventional cuts and breaks are used to draw the viewer’s attention to particular areas. Atlas Studio’s strategy of bringing together typefaces, colours, images and techniques to create a new whole is deployed not just in posters but also in book design. In Learning from Warsaw (2013), which documents events related to architecture in the Polish capital, Atlas Studio demonstrated their ability to extend their experimentation on both the material and technical planes. This can be seen, for example, at the edge of the double pages, where the printer’s mark of the uncut paper sheets is still visible.
When creative experiment meets practised typographical skill, the results usually turn out to be successful – and Atlas Studio is no exception.
