Chroma takes inspiration from a poster advertising light bulbs, discovered in Armin Hofmann’s book, Graphic Design Manual: Principles and Practice (1965). The typeface initially drew from the poster’s geometrically constructed letterforms, but in the process moved far beyond its source.
Initiated in 2018, Chroma has since evolved from a display typeface to a widely applicable all-terrain grotesk, balancing strong characteristics with a down-to-earth attitude. The font is being developed to include a full family of weights, italics, stylistic alternates and a style with coloured counters, referring back to its source of inspiration. Chroma will officially be released through Source Type.
